Going Against the Grain
My decision to have proton therapy for prostate cancer in 2006 was met with skepticism and rejection. As a practicing physician, my colleagues were unfamiliar with proton therapy and strongly urged me to have "traditional" therapy. However, when I researched my options, it was obvious that the best choice for me was proton therapy. In March 2007, I went to Loma Linda University Medical Center in California and received 44 treatments with minimal side effects.
Not only did I receive the highest quality of care, I also experienced the healing effects of love, compassion, caring and faith. The weekly meetings, the excursions for local events and dining, the fellowship of the Balloon Brothers, the expertise of all the staff, and the access to the Drayson Center all helped in my healing. I experienced no side effects: No incontinence, no impotence and no bowel issues.
In 2010, three years after my proton therapy treatment, I reunited with my highschool sweetheart at our 50th class reunion. We married on 11/11/2011 at 11:00! Since then, we have traveled over 150,000 miles together - she teaches Hawaiian healing and shares the healing power of Aloha! Together, we work to help people forgive, release the past, and discover who they are created to be.
Now my wife faces breast cancer and we are having all our care at Loma Linda University Medical Center (although we live in Hawaii). My wife has helped many women in her healing center deal with the radiation and chemotherapy challenges and this was a strong impetus for us to investigate the option of proton therapy for breast cancer. The healing of the whole person is very important to us and we find that LLUMC best meets our desires. It appears she will be a candidate for 10 days of proton therapy and will avoid the conventional 6 week radiation treatment with its associated sequelae.
My wife will share her story in the future and we hope our experience will assist others in their difficult choices.

Update 2015
I am celebrating 8 years post-proton treatment with no recurrence, no side effects, and not one penny for medications. As a physician, I was surprised at the lack of knowledge in the medical community about the benefits of proton therapy. After much research, I chose this modality and I awaken daily with a thankful heart. Thanks to Dr. Slater and his colleagues at Loma Linda University Cancer Canter, to Bob Marckini, founder of the BOB, for his leadership, and to all the courageous men who did not listen to the "party line" and chose instead to seek the truth. Blessings on all my "Brothers."
