Surgery at age 57 and the cancer returned. Salvage proton therapy did the job.

I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in March 2000 at the age of 57. My urologist outlined several options for treating the cancer, but he did not mention Proton Beam Therapy. As I investigated my treatment options, I was unaware of Proton Beam Therapy so I elected to have my prostate surgically removed. The radical prostatectomy was done in July 2000.

My communication with Ed (former proton patient and BOB member) clearly illustrates out how important it is for those of us who have been blessed with protons to share our experiences with others. That is why I am sharing my story.

"My experience at LLUCC was great. Side effects from [proton] treatment were, in fact, minimal, and all the other patients I spoke to, who came to Loma Linda from all over the world, had similar experiences."

“Loma Linda has changed me from a cancer victim to a cancer survivor, from a person filled with fear of death to a person joyfully celebrating life - past, present and future . . .”

Below is Pastor Agnir's graduation speech from January 8, 2003:

When Charles was first diagnosed, he chose hormones and Cryosurgery. Then his PSA rose to 15. Next came Proton. PSA is 0.02 four years after treatment.

Most everybody already knows this. Prostate cancer is a big business. It became apparent to me that many physicians are quite narrow-minded when it comes to offering advice.

I would love to share my wonderful experience of proton treatment at Loma Linda University Cancer Center in California. While we were there, my wife and I felt very special. The staff was marvelous. They were so kind to us.

"The doctor told me, "Your PSA is 7.15 … your Gleason score is 8. I recommend surgery; that's the gold standard. I chose proton instead and I'm doing great ... Having started 2004 with a cancer diagnosis, little did I know that it would turn into perhaps the best year of my life."

Reverend Ewing W. "Bud" Carroll, Jr. - Hong Kong, SAR, China

About Bud's proton treatment at Loma Linda University Cancer Center: “The Best holiday I’ve ever experienced ... As a Christian pastor and social activist, I’m not worrying about going to heaven … I’m already here!”

"Treating cancer shouldn't be this easy and this much fun."

"It's a darn short movie. How'd we ever get here?"

As a whole, my treatment was an unbelievable experience that I will never forget. LLUCC, the BOB, and the friends I have made along the way will be in my heart forever."
